1.
Why did you choose your topic? |
I
chose the phonograph as my topic because I am passionate about music, and I wanted
to choose a topic that would be exciting and interesting to me. |
2.
What was the most interesting thing you learned? |
The
wax cylinders could only hold about two minutes of sound, so composers had to
make their songs short and easily recognizable. This greatly changed much of
the popular music during that time period. |
3.
Provide a few additional fun facts. |
· The word
“phonograph” literally means “sound-writer.”
· The first
words ever recorded by Thomas Edison’s phonograph were “Mary had a little
lamb.” · Edison offered
possible future uses for the phonograph in the “North American Review” in
June 1878. · In 1891,
prices for the phonograph diminished in from $150 down to $20 for the
standard model. It was only $7.50 for
a small model known as the Gem, introduced in 1899. · Cylinders were
usually 50 cents each. |
4.
Explain how your topic can relate to other
subjects besides history. |
The
phonograph can also relate to science because of the way that it translates
vibrations from sound energy and reproduces sound. Furthermore, it can relate to music history
because it changed the way that composers had to write songs for them to fit
onto the wax cylinders. |
5.
In the end, were you happy with your choice? Why or why not? |
I
am very happy with my choice because it was fun researching the history of
recorded music. Also, I learned about
how the phonograph works and how it impacted modern music. |
